Society, aware of the environmental impact of the construction industry, is pushing builders and architects to demand transparency on the environmental impact of products.
They are looking for detailed information on the sustainability of materials, the carbon footprint of manufacturing processes and the overall environmental friendliness of a product’s life cycle.
At Honext, in order to guarantee the circularity of our material, we have used the most demanding and prestigious third party certifications to show transparency and truthfulness to the market about our innovative product.
The latest certification obtained by HONEXT® Boards has been the EPD or Global EPD and in this news we explain what it is and according to which regulations it is written.
Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
First, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), developed according to ISO 14025, provide verified information about a product’s environmental performance.
However, an EPD does not establish minimum environmental requirements. Instead, it provides transparent and objective information.
Furthermore, it analyses, collects and communicates environmental data throughout the supply chain. As a result, companies can compare products using verified Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) data.
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) used for an EPD follows Product Category Rules (PCRs).
These rules define the specific requirements and guidelines for preparing Environmental Product Declarations for different product categories, such as cement, wood, or insulation materials.
In addition, PCRs are published as technical standards or by recognised programme operators.
As a result, products with similar functions are assessed using consistent and comparable criteria.
The Life Cycle Assessment for HONEXT® Boards was carried out by Eco Intelligent Growth. Furthermore, the study follows the recommendations of ISO 14040:2006 and ISO 14044:2006.
The assessment also uses UNE-EN 15804:2012+A2:2020 as the reference standard and follows a cradle-to-gate approach.
First, the study was based on operational data collected from the HONEXT® factory in Vacarisses (Barcelona). Specifically, it analysed material and energy consumption, air emissions, water discharges, and waste generation.
Finally, the assessment covers every stage of the manufacturing process. This includes raw material production, transport to the factory, board manufacturing, the use of auxiliary materials, and product distribution to customers.
