Honext at FLEARCHITECTURE: Circular Building Materials Driving Architectural Innovation

Over the past months, Honext has been proud to be part of FLEARCHITECTURE – Repurposing the Given, one of the exhibitions included in the official programme of Barcelona World Capital of Architecture 2026 and held within the framework of the UIA World Congress of Architects.

Hosted at Mercat dels Encants, the exhibition has brought together architecture studios, universities, institutions and innovative material manufacturers around a shared ambition: rethinking the future of architecture by making better use of existing resources.

As the exhibition comes to a close, it leaves behind an important message: the future of architecture is not only about building new, but about building better with what already exists.

Repurposing the Given: a new approach to circular architecture

Curated under the concept «Repurposing the Given», FLEARCHITECTURE has explored how existing buildings, materials and construction systems can become the starting point for contemporary architecture.

Rather than treating sustainability as an add-on, the exhibition has demonstrated how reuse, rehabilitation and material recovery can become fundamental design strategies.

Through built examples and architectural research, visitors have discovered projects that combine:

  • adaptive reuse of buildings and materials
  • preservation of architectural heritage
  • traditional craftsmanship with contemporary construction
  • circular thinking as part of everyday architectural practice

The exhibition has highlighted that circularity is not only about recycling—it is about extending the value and life of materials already available.

Honext’s contribution to circular building materials

As part of the exhibition, Honext has showcased how circular building materials can support healthier, lower-impact interior architecture.

Manufactured from recycled cellulose fibres, HONEXT® Boards transform post-consumer paper waste into high-performance panels designed for interior applications. The boards are:

  • made from recycled cellulose waste
  • fully recyclable at the end of their life
  • manufactured without added resins or formaldehyde
  • suitable for healthy indoor environments thanks to their low-emission composition

Designed for multiple use cycles, HONEXT® Boards demonstrate how waste can become a valuable construction resource, supporting architects and designers in reducing material consumption while maintaining high technical and aesthetic performance.

From ideas to real architectural applications

One of the strengths of FLEARCHITECTURE Barcelona has been its focus on real projects rather than concepts.

Instead of presenting theoretical solutions, the exhibition has connected innovative materials with practical architectural applications, showing how circular strategies are already being implemented across renovation, interiors and adaptive reuse projects.

For Honext, participating in this initiative has been an opportunity to contribute to a broader conversation about how materials can remain in continuous use, reducing waste while creating healthier interior spaces.

Building the future through material circularity

The conversations generated throughout FLEARCHITECTURE reinforce a growing shift within the construction sector.

Architecture is increasingly moving beyond selecting materials with lower environmental impact towards choosing products designed to remain in circulation for as long as possible.

This vision closely aligns with HONEXT® Boards, developed to support circular construction through recycled raw materials, long-lasting performance and continuous recyclability. HONEXT® Boards are also C2C Certified® Material Health Gold according to Version 4.0, recognising their optimisation for material health and the safe selection of ingredients.

As FLEARCHITECTURE concludes, its legacy extends beyond the exhibition itself. It demonstrates that collaboration between architects, manufacturers and researchers is essential to accelerating the transition towards a more circular built environment.
