HONEXT STORIES – Quality Craft Group has chosen HONEXT to design a piece of furniture

Material innovation plays a key role in creating a positive impact.

For this reason, Quality Craft Group chose HONEXT® to develop a piece of furniture designed to challenge conventional industry practices.

The design uses a material made from recycled cellulose fibres rather than earth-depleting virgin resources. As a result, it offers a more responsible approach to furniture production.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the piece demonstrates how thoughtful design can influence material choices. Creativity, functionality and sustainability come together in a single solution.

Moreover, the furniture follows circular design principles. Every decision was guided by the ambition to reduce waste and maximise resource efficiency.

Ultimately, this project shows how material innovation can open new possibilities for furniture design while helping to reduce the consumption of virgin materials.

A fully sustainable piece of furniture, made with HONEXT® and solid wood off-cuts recovered from other furniture production. No hardware. No toxic additives.

To learn more about the project and the company behind it, we spoke with Lenny, Oscar and Sandra.

We would like to know more about Quality Craft Group.

You are a company that proposes new ways of doing things.

Quality Craft Group was founded by Oscar and myself with project management at the heart of our business.

Today, we work with architects, builders and interior designers. Our role is to provide a complete service, covering technical development, manufacturing and installation.

In the past, each specialist was hired separately. Electricians, carpenters and other professionals worked independently. However, the industry has evolved significantly. Project managers now look for companies that can deliver a complete solution.

This need helped shape Quality Craft Group. From the beginning, we wanted to build a socially responsible company.

Equality and fairness have always been central to our vision. In fact, the original idea behind creating Quality Craft Group was to prove that it is possible to work ethically while creating value.

Driving Change Through Collaboration and Sustainability

Sandra brought the environmental sustainability perspective to the project. That approach immediately connected with our own values and long-term vision.

After collaborating on previous projects, I was delighted when Óscar contacted me about this new initiative.

The concept immediately caught my attention. It combined social equality, respect for people, care for the planet and a commitment to local production.

Within the project, my role is to help communicate those values and make them visible to others.

Throughout my career, I have worked across many different sectors. This experience allows me to bring a broad perspective and a diverse set of skills to a project with so much potential.

What makes this initiative particularly interesting is the combination of profiles behind it. Lenny and Oscar approach challenges from different angles. Nevertheless, their strengths complement each other perfectly.

Beyond their different backgrounds, they share the same energy and commitment. Both are fully invested in bringing this groundbreaking project to life.

Our motivation comes from a bottom-up approach. Rather than focusing on large-scale change, we start by looking at what can be improved in our immediate environment.

This is the essence of the m² theory: begin with the basics and build from there.

Every step starts with the same question: what can we do? Sometimes the answer is creating new collaborations. In other cases, it means promoting innovative materials or improving processes.

Reducing environmental impacts and optimising resources are also part of that journey.

Ultimately, lasting change is built through practical actions taken every day.

How did the project come about and why did you choose HONEXT® for the design?

Our main activity as a company is the management of interior design and fit-out projects. However, we are also committed to developing our own ideas and expanding our services.

For this reason, we dedicate time to designing and creating unique furniture pieces. The goal is to build a catalogue of distinctive products with their own identity.

This particular project started with a request from clients looking for a bespoke piece of furniture made from sustainable materials. During that process, we discovered HONEXT®, a truly innovative material.

From the very beginning, we saw an opportunity to do things differently. Whenever a new material is introduced, new possibilities emerge. At the same time, it requires adapting existing processes and exploring new ways of working.

Therefore, incorporating HONEXT® meant embracing change. It required flexibility, curiosity and a willingness to experiment. In our opinion, that mindset is essential for innovation.

Too often, people rely on familiar methods simply because they have always worked that way. However, progress depends on challenging established habits and being open to new approaches.

Ultimately, this project reflects that belief. By working with HONEXT®, we were able to explore a different way of designing and manufacturing furniture while staying true to our sustainability values.

What has been the biggest challenge in using HONEXT® and how did you overcome it?

Working with HONEXT® required us to rethink some of our usual manufacturing processes. As with any innovative material, adaptation was necessary.

HONEXT® boards are 12 mm thick. Therefore, in some areas, we bonded two boards together to increase strength and achieve the required performance. We also calibrated specific components where additional precision was needed.

In addition, we chose a wooden biscuit joint system. This solution reduced the need for excessive edge machining while maintaining structural stability.

For the load-bearing elements, we combined HONEXT® with solid wood off-cuts recovered from other furniture production processes. These pieces were used for components such as the supporting legs, which carry the weight of the furniture.

As a result, we achieved a piece that offers the same functionality and durability expected from conventional furniture.

At the same time, the design incorporates recycled and recyclable materials while minimising waste generation.

Furthermore, the furniture was conceived as a local product. It is designed to be durable, unique and built to last.

Ultimately, the project demonstrates how circular materials and thoughtful design can work together without compromising performance.

Besides its environmental benefits, what are the positive aspects of HONEXT®?

One of the first advantages we noticed was its lightness.

Compared with other furniture pieces of a similar size, the final product was significantly lighter. As a result, it is easier to transport, handle and install. This is undoubtedly one of the material’s key strengths.

Another important benefit is material health.

HONEXT® contains no added VOCs. Therefore, it does not contribute unnecessary emissions to indoor environments. In many markets, this is becoming an increasingly important requirement for furniture buyers, architects and designers.

Furthermore, healthy materials are now a key consideration in interior design. People want products that support better indoor environments and contribute to occupant wellbeing.

Versatility is another major advantage.

HONEXT® offers a wide range of finishing possibilities. It can be machined, milled, coated and customised in different ways depending on the design objective.

As a result, the material provides significant creative freedom for designers and manufacturers.

Ultimately, HONEXT® combines lightness, material health, versatility and circularity in a single solution. These characteristics make it particularly attractive for sustainable furniture and interior design projects.

How was your experience working with HONEXT®?

Our experience has been extremely positive.

HONEXT® continues to push material innovation forward by developing solutions that combine sustainability, performance and circularity.

However, the value of HONEXT® goes beyond the material itself.

Throughout the project, the HONEXT® team supported us at every stage of development. From the initial concept to the final execution, they were actively involved in finding solutions and overcoming challenges.

Furthermore, this collaborative approach helped us achieve a better final result.

In our opinion, successful projects are built on strong partnerships. When people share the same vision and work towards a common goal, innovation becomes possible.

Ultimately, this project shows what can be achieved through collaboration, creativity and a shared commitment to more sustainable design.
