Acoustic and Thermal Comfort with Circular Materials – University of Valencia Physics Laboratory
At the University of Valencia, the General Physics Laboratory has undergone a sustainable renovation. The project aims to improve acoustic and thermal comfort while creating a better learning environment.
Located in Burjassot, Spain, this educational space combines natural materials with energy-efficient solutions. In addition, the renovation uses HONEXT® Boards for wall cladding and acoustic ceiling applications.
As a result, the laboratory brings together responsible material selection and functional design. Furthermore, these improvements help create a more comfortable space for students and teaching staff.
Good acoustic conditions are essential in educational environments. Therefore, the laboratory incorporates HONEXT® Boards into its wall and ceiling design.
These panels are made from recycled cellulose fibres. Moreover, their natural texture adds warmth and character to the renovated interior.
The acoustic ceiling forms part of the project’s indoor comfort strategy. Meanwhile, HONEXT® wall cladding provides a consistent architectural finish.
Consequently, the renovation combines functional solutions with circular materials.
Improving thermal comfort was another key objective of the renovation. For this reason, the project combines HONEXT® Boards with a 6 cm layer of natural cork.
In addition, high-performance windows and heat recovery ventilation support energy efficiency. Together, these solutions contribute to the laboratory’s acoustic and thermal comfort strategy.
A protective water-based varnish was also applied to the boards. As a result, the finish helps preserve their appearance in a frequently used educational space.
Overall, the renovation brings together several solutions to improve indoor conditions.
Responsible resource use is central to the project’s material strategy. In total, 268 m² of HONEXT® Boards were installed, representing approximately 1,930 kg of recovered waste.
HONEXT® transforms recovered cellulose fibres into new building materials. Therefore, the boards support circular construction and help reduce the demand for virgin resources.
Another important feature is their composition. In particular, HONEXT® Boards are manufactured without added formaldehyde.
Furthermore, this supports responsible material selection for educational interiors. Ultimately, the University of Valencia Physics Laboratory demonstrates how circular materials and thoughtful design can contribute to more sustainable educational buildings.

HONEXT® Boards were incorporated into the laboratory’s acoustic ceiling as part of its interior comfort strategy.
Made from recycled cellulose fibres, the material supports circular construction. In addition, its natural appearance complements the renovated learning environment.
As a result, the ceiling combines functional design with a more responsible approach to material selection.
The laboratory also features HONEXT® Boards as interior wall cladding.
To improve insulation, the project combines the boards with a 6 cm layer of natural cork. Together, these materials support the renovation’s acoustic and thermal comfort objectives.
Furthermore, the circular composition of HONEXT® Boards helps reduce the demand for virgin resources. This makes the material a valuable part of the project’s sustainability strategy.
